No Halfway Education Suffices for the Latter-day Saint

This post is by Emily Hardman. A woman who never settles for less.

Whereas, the glory of God is intelligence;
Whereas our ultimate goal is to become like him and inherit the same glory;
Whereas, glory of God is intelligence; and
Whereas, intelligence only comes through obedience in keeping his commandments
(D&C 93: 28 &36);
THEREFORE, my greatest pursuit is my quest for obedience.

My Educational Mission Statement

I have strayed from the form to learn. I will no longer suffer from academic bulimia. I will live the higher law; the principle of education. We are here to gain experience and prove ourselves herewith. We are to acquire all the knowledge we can to gain more understanding about the world around us.

I will “Seek learning by study and also by faith” (D&C 88:118)

I will take every opportunity to acquire new knowledge which includes:

Going the extra mile to understand, even when no extra credit is given and there is  no “test” benefit. I will strive to remember that being an independent learner and having something become part of the fabric of my soul is much better then a regurgitating machine with a huge “recycle bin” which happens to get an  “A”

I am gaining knowledge to become the best person, wife and mother I can; I am preparing my mind for future learning and to become and instrument in the hands of the Lord. I am striving to become like God who knows all things – Chemistry, Biology, Math, etc.

“The whole idea of Mormonism is improvement – mentally, physically, morally and spiritually.  No half way education suffices for the Latter-day Saint.” (The Teachings of Lorenzo Snow, 1984, pp. 26-27)

“The mere stuffing of the mind with knowledge of facts is not education. The mind must not only posses a knowledge of truth, but the soul must revere it, cherish it, love it as a priceless gem; and this human life must be guided and shaped by it in order to fulfill its destiny.” (Joseph F. Smith, The Contributor 16:570, June 5, 1895)

I have a divine mission.  I am a child of God.
